Natural Hair During Colder Weather
A of my clients are more concerned with their style options, and are not convinced that natural hair provides versatility and beauty. Protective styling is very important during the winter months; both locks and other styles will need a large amount of moisture to stay healthy in the colder months.
Conditioning Your Locks
A lot of stylists don’t stress the importance of conditioning natural hair and locks. There is a misconception that conditioner will loosen up the locks. Hair needs more moisture in cold weather and hair and scalp treatments are very important.
How to Use Products at Home
Clients need to leave the salon with products and a follow up regimen. I suggest using a hooded hair steamer with Nourish & Shine cocktailed with Scalp Nourishing Serum, and then sit the client under the steamer for 10-15 minutes. If you don’t have a steamer you can do the same treatment using a plastic cap for 30 minutes. Use plastic cap with or without a dryer. However, for best results use a dryer.

During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, you may notice that the cold weather has left your hair feeling dry and frizzy. Dry, damaged hair can become brittle and break easily, especially if you tend to overuse chemical processes such as perms, dyes, relaxers and straighteners. Dryness can also be caused by heat styling tools such as blow dryers, flat irons and curling irons. Naturalistas everywhere are looking for a way to add some moisture to their dehydrated tresses. After all, nobody wants crunchy, frizzy hair for Christmas.
The Q-Redew handheld hair steamer is the perfect tool to add moisture to your hair without washing or oversaturating your curls with a spray bottle.
It uses a warm steam mist to give your hair natural volume and texture. The Q-Redew hydrates, reshapes and restyles dry hair in minutes. No mess, fuss, or chemicals – simply by using water. Give your curls a boost, restore moisture to dry hair, lift flat hair and transform bedhead into your best hairstyle.

Love Your Hair,
Twist-outs are one of many hairstyle options one can do to maintain healthy hair. It requires no heat usage, thus preventing heat damage. It can be worn for days at a time, therefore requiring little mechanical manipulation to our tresses. With twist-outs there is no tension on the scalp, and thus no damage to the hair follicle. What’s more? It is a cute hairstyle for any length of natural hair! Here are 3 tips to help your twist-outs last longer…with the use of Jane Carter Solution Natural Twist Out Foam:
- Wear smaller twists to make them last longer.
For some naturals, twisting down to the very ends of the hair can lead to twist-outs with frizzy ends. An alternative method is to twist until just before you reach the ends of your hair and then coil these ends around your finger.
- Twist hair when 25% dry.
Twisting on dry hair will produce a twist-out that only lasts for a short period; it’s important to twist on wet or damp hair in order to achieve optimal definition and a longer lasting style. Avoid twisting on hair that is 100% wet; fully wet hair is more prone to breakage via tension while twisting.
- Protect your hair during your beauty sleep.
Minimize frizz by using a satin bonnet; for those with medium to long hair, put your twist-out into 10-12 big twists and cover with a satin bonnet. In the morning undo the big twists and fluff into your style. For those with shorter hair, there is no need to re-twist prior to bedtime. Simply cover with a satin bonnet; in the morning, remove the bonnet and fluff your hair.

Women of all ages gathered at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ for the annual Black Girls Rock Awards. The show celebrates the strengths, triumphs and talents of black women; it was a star studded event with celebrities gracing the red carpet – but it was the Chairman and CEO of BET, Deborah Lee, that caught our eyes with her fabulous curls!
Tightly coiled hair is prone to shrinkage, susceptible to dryness and vulnerable to frizz; proper nourishment and thorough conditioning is critical when styling and cleansing. Keeping hair moisturized and using styling products that will lock the natural curl pattern into hair without encouraging any frizz is the answer! Follow these tips to recreate her defined coils…
- Gently comb out the tangles with a wide tooth comb in the shower while Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner is still in your hair, rinse thoroughly.
- While hair is wet, add a liberal amount of Wrap & Roll; pull it through to the ends of hair.
- Section hair, apply a generous amount of Curl Defining Cream through the hair and finger comb.
- For added shine and to seal in moisture use a pea sized amount of Nourish & Shine as a finisher.
Perfectly defined curls that are moisturized and free of frizz!
