Crowns of Glory

Andrea Pippins, a Baltimore-based graphic designer, released a four-poster series of prints titled “Crowns of Color” last week as answer for her need of diverse affordable art a light-hearted celebration of black women’s hair.

In a recent magazine interview, Pippins describes how she hopes to steer the black hair conversation in a different direction, “With all due respect, I am personally tired of the natural hair conversation in regards to one having to defend the choice to go natural, encouraging someone to go natural, or speaking to it from a place of political debate.”

Crowns of Color is meant to be celebratory, quirky, and a documentation of our culture. Like the barbershop signs from Africa. Although they are simply style guides for the clients who patron the shop they are also reflections of history—a record of what hairstyles were hot at different periods of time in different parts of the continent. I wanted to pay homage to that.

Andrea Pippins ROCKS!

Cut the Codependency

Are you in a codependent relationship?

When the codependent is drowning, someone else’s life flashes before their eyes. ~ unkown

Codependency is habitual behaviors that are ultimately self-destructive. Almost everyone (at times) has symptoms of codependency, no one escapes. By definition, codependency means making a relationship more important to you than you are to yourself; it’s a pattern of detrimental, behavioral interactions within a dysfunctional relationship. The codependent develops intense feelings and will try anything to make the relationship survive.

We all know that couple-the ones who live together, eat together, exercise together, adopt the same hobbies and spend every waking (and sleeping, for that matter) moment together. Their codependency knows no bounds…care taking, low self-worth, repression, obsessive behaviors, controlling behaviors, denial, dependency, poor boundaries, and lack of trust – all signs of codependency. Could this be you?

In order to start the healing, you must learn that happiness is inside of us – not outside.  It is important for your own emotional health, as well as others, to learn the fine line between giving that benefits and serves another verses giving that hinders. Remember to balance giving and receiving, to give from your overflow, to notice the effect of your giving on another and to take care of yourself.
Shift the relationship within you, the change is worth it!

Coconut milk is excellent for strengthening your immune system since it’s loaded with vitamins and minerals. It’s also full of dietary fiber, promoting a healthy digestive system. When your body is replenished with essential vitamins and minerals, your digestive system is clear and you’re using nourishing hair care products (like Jane Carter Solution) – your hair will begin to thrive by default! Combine that with your daily intake of water (at least half your weight in ounces) and you’ll be full of energy and glowing in no time.

Here’s a Dr. Oz smoothie to make hair healthy from the inside out; combining coconut milk, unsweetened almond milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and chia seed.  Chia seeds are loaded with essential fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and are an excellent source of protein which is essential for healthy skin, nails, and hair for only 216 calories per 16 ounce serving.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • Stevia to sweeten*

Instructions:

  • Add almond milk and chia seeds then let sit for 15 minutes. Chia seeds will absorb milk and become jelly like.
  • Add remaining ingredients and stir
  • Serve and Enjoy!
