Holiday Glamour Puss

One of my favorite things about the holiday season (other than yummy bites and cocktails, of course), is definitely getting all dolled up for dinners, parties and soirees. Hair accessories are a great way to reinvent what is already in your closet. Make heads turn this season with festively chic accents!

  1. Bows are not for little girls anymore. Whether you want to add a little glam to an updo or are looking to pin back one side, these precious gold and silver Henri Bendel Rivet Bow Pave Barrettes ($28) are the perfect glittery accent.
  2. Nothing says ultra-glam like feathers, they have the ability to spice up any frock. Can be worn with almost any style, this Remington Feather Headband ($8) has a jewel accent for extra flare.
  3. If you have trouble turning a scarf into a turban, take a shortcut with this Eugenia Kim Turban Knot Headband ($99). This accessory is best paired with an updo or a full topknot.

Be sure to check out my haute hair accessory picks for the season and use them to give your holiday ensemble a head-turning finish!

A Determined Soul

There is no chance, no destiny, no fate,
Can circumvent or hinder or control
The firm resolve of a determined soul. ~Ella Wheeler Wilcox

The key to success in life – BELIEVE in yourself and in your cause and BELIEVE in it even in the face of skepticism, ridicule, adversity, doubt or uncertainty.

Believe in your cause even when the going is tough. Believe in your cause even when everyone appears to be against you. Give it all you have. Give it all you have, all the time. Have a grand vision and never let your vision be deterred. Our dreams and good intentions are powerful, real, and hold the promise of a happier life, a better you, a sense of pride and accomplishment. But when the rubber meets the road, when it’s time to take action, it feels like you are wading waist-high in water with weights tied to your feet. Your heart is willing, but your mind and body resist. The mental difficulty of even the smallest actions can be shocking and immensely disappointing.

If you have intended with all of your heart to create a good habit, drop a bad one, fulfill a goal, or complete a project, and you have failed at it, you are not alone. Nearly everyone has difficulty maintaining resolve and following through. Even those who are self-disciplined weren’t born that way. It is a learned skill — one that takes practice and the specific knowledge of how to go about it.

Why wait, start practicing TODAY!

Smart Packing

Labor Day weekend is almost upon us…the last summer soiree, the last summer bbq, the last summer 3 day weekend.

A lot of people are hitting the road or the friendly skies for the last hurrah; what are you and your hair packing? Aside from a bathing suit, little white dress, strappy sandals and chic wide-brim hat – don’t forget about your hair!
The following steps will protect your hair until you get home from a day trip or back to your hotel room if vacationing.

  1. Before diving in, completely wet hair with water and Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner.
  2. Apply a thin layer of Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner.
  3. Dive in!
  4. Immediately rinse hair thoroughly with water and rehydrate with Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner until you are able to shampoo and condition later that same day.

After a day of sun and swimming, I recommend doing the following to take care of your hair and scalp:

  1. Shampoo twice with Hydrating Invigorating Shampoo SLS Free.
  2. Follow with Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner under a conditioning cap and apply heat for deeper conditioning.
  3. Rehydrate with Leave-In Conditioner and style as usual.

Remember to moisturize daily with Hair Nourishing Cream or Nourish & Shine to restore and maintain moisture balance (for your hair and your skin).

The goal is to hydrate, hydrate, and then hydrate some more!

The Coiffure Project

Black-and-white photos have never been this haute!

(Photographer: Glenford Nunez)

“The Coiffure Project” is a collection of portraits celebrating the beauty of black with awesomely magnificent natural hair. Shot by Glenford Nunez of Baltimore, Maryland (TYP Photography Studio); the images are glorious and regal. This all started by accident. Nunez was looking at the extensive collection of pictures he’d taken of his natural-haired assistant one day, Nunez decided to run with the idea of photographing curly maned black women.

Nunez wasn’t aware of the natural hair movement on the rise but now that women from across the country have thanked him for providing inspiration, he hopes that this project will bring the beauty of natural hair to the forefront.

We hope so too!

Halle Talks Hair

Halle Berry was recently interviewed on Elle Magazine’s fashion blog. She talked about hair, beauty and aging gracefully – three things that all women can appreciate. She spoke of her aesthetician who is her skin-whisperer, expressed that beauty is embracing every stage of your life with confidence and grace like Tina Turner and Audrey Hepburn and then Halle talked hair…

Elle:    You’re known for your pixie cut. What inspired you to grow your hair out?

Halle: Well, I’m probably not going to grow it out; these are extensions. I love short hair—that’s me, that’s who I am. I just feel confident and feel like my best self when I have short hair. But it’s fun to change sometimes. I get a little bored and, as a woman, I want to change my shoes, my outfit, and my hair. And thanks to extensions, it’s easy to do. The trick is that you have to get hair that looks like it’s actually growing out of your head—it has to be the same texture as your natural hair. My hair is naturally curly like this, so you’re not able to see where the extensions begin.

Yes, gotta love her for embracing it all – from her naturally curly hair to extensions. You’re your hair however you wear it!
