How Long, is Too Long

We women are serious about our deep conditioning – a day will be preselected, we’ve decided on our deep conditioning snack and what to watch as we detangle. It’s a ritual that is greatly appreciated by our hair. How long do you condition your hair; 60 minutes, 2 hours, overnight?

conditioning 1

It’s all about balance, ladies. The goal is the perfect protein to moisture ratio….which means, not over conditioning your hair. 20- 30 minutes will do; the key ingredients that can stick to hair will do so within seconds of applying the conditioner. After 30 minutes from initial application, hair no longer absorbs conditioner. Adding heat assists in the swelling or opening of cuticles, allowing for increased benefits of your conditioner’s ingredients. Mission complete!

All summer I will be stressing the importance of moisturizing your mane, but it’s also important to follow the “everything in moderation” motto. Having too much of a good thing (conditioner) can actually start damaging your locks and cause limp, greasy strands over time.

Locs require a bit of TLC, mainly moisture. Moisture is needed to maintain healthy hair and to avoid “ashy loc syndrome”. (gasp) Twist & Lock is a great emollient, it increases moisture and shine to your hair and is terrific for scalp health. You don’t have to worry about residue or attracting dirt, because there is no wax or petrolatum in this product – only all natural butters, vitamins and essential oils whipped into a super light-weight cream, which makes this product perfect for daily use on any natural hair style.

Let’s start from the beginning on what you can do to maintain and deliver moisture to your hair. Keeping your dreads clean not only promotes healthy hair growth, but helps get them tighter and stronger.

  1. Dilute a sulphate-free shampoo to cleanse hair and remove build up; try Jane Carter Solution Hydrating Invigorating SLS-Free.
  1. Yes, you must deep condition your locs. Your hair will still need regular nourishment which will come in the form of moisture and protein; try Jane Carter Solution Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner.
  1. Leave-in conditioners open up the cuticle, moisturizing and coating the hair shaft; try Jane Carter Solution Restore Moisture Mist.
  1. Always opt for products that do not clog the pores or cause build-up; avoid balms like beeswax or products that have mineral oil as their base. Moisturizing and emoliency is needed to reduce stiffness of hair and tightness of scalp; try Jane Carter Solution Twist & Lock.
  1. Drink water – DAILY.

Steam Time: How to Steam Your Hair for Added Moisture

The “moisture” in every moisturizing product is water; the goal is for the product to deliver water. Enhance the moisture that your hair receives through steaming!

steam

There are many benefits to steam; great way to get moisture into low porosity coarse hair, increases moisture levels in the scalp to diminish dandruff, prevents shrinkage and increases blood flow to the scalp promoting hair growth. Most people steam because it’s a great way to open up the hair follicles to receive all the benefits of deep conditioning treatments.

You can start steaming right now, at home easily. Start with freshly washed hair that has been detangled, generously apply Jane Carter Solution Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner and follow the steps below:

  1. Soak a clean towel under water.
  2. Place wet towel in microwave for 2 minutes or until very warm.
  3. Wring loosely; wrap towel around your head, covering all of your hair.
  4. Cover towel with a plastic cap.
  5. Sit under hooded or bonnet dryer for 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Rinse hair, apply Hydrate Quench for an extra dose of moisture and to strengthen hair with soy protein and panthenol. Follow up with Hydrate Seal & Shine to lock in moisture and seal hair cuticle to retain moisture; style as usual.

Tip – Another easy way to treat yourself to more moisture is by placing a humidifier in your bedroom which will add moisture back into the air and your hair while you sleep.

Jane Carter Solution – Guide to Conditioning Hair

Conditioning is extremely important for African-American hair, colored-treated and relaxed hair as it adds the much needed moisture that your hair requires. A weekly deep conditioning provides hair the strength, shine and elasticity that’s needed for healthy hair.

condition_hair_janecartersolutionConditioning regularly gives hair the extra flexibility to stay strong and keeps it moisturized in the harsh, hot weather we will soon be experiencing. It also makes combing easier and styling more manageable. Seems simple enough, right? Well it is!

Try Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner under a heated dryer to maximize your conditioning experience and rinse with cool water to close the hair cuticle. Follow up with Hydrate Quench to seal in the moisture prevent frizziness, lightly mist with Hydrate Seal & Shine to add incredible shine and reduce dryness that may occur due to styling and heat.

Style as usual.

Your Hair Needs its Beauty Rest

How do you care for your hair at night? You may not know the importance of caring for your hair at night, it’s just as important as protecting it from the harsh elements or from styling and primping.

sleepingYou might care for your hair well during the daytime hours, but you might not give enough thought to caring for your hair while asleep. For most women of color, tying up our hair before bed is a necessary task. Naturally textured hair is already prone to tangles and leaving it unarmed at night, basically gorilla style, is inviting the possibility of even more tangles. While sleeping, you toss, you turn, and it is likely that your hair will get matted and tangled in the process. Again, leading to more sustained damage. Wrapping your hair at night can help your hair to retain moisture and minimize breakage!

Make sure your hair is moisturized before you go to sleep…dryness is the enemy of hair, especially natural hair. If you don’t have a silk pillow case you should be tying your hair down with a silk scarf; loosely pull up your hair into a bun, re-twist, re-braid, pin curl it and tie a silk scarf over it. Nightcaps and scarves are especially useful if you have curlier styles. These help to hold the curls while you sleep and prevent them from rubbing against one another and knotting up.

How do you maintain your hair at night?
