Combat Cold Weather: No More Winter Hair Woes

winterblues

When winter weather hits, a bad hair day can last an entire season! As much as you like that nip in the air during winter, your hair is susceptible to a bunch of hair-raising situations that can ruin your entire day. It almost seems as if dry hair and winter is an inseparable pair. This season’s Polar Vortex is the most rigorous, and it is your hair’s number one enemy. Taking care of your hair truly is a year-long process, especially when frosty temperatures have taken over; dry scalp, brittle hair, static electricity, flyaways, limp locks, and split ends are some of the challenges your strands face.

No matter what’s causing your winter hair woes, you can take both protective and replenishing steps. Products that contain fatty acids and humectants are best at moisturizing parched hair; the butters and essential oils Jane Carter Solution products provided an added bonus of longer lasting hydration and moisture retention. The key is in conditioning! Regular deep conditioning, with heat, feeds the hair nutrients and increases the penetration to the cortex. Leave-in conditioner not only protects hair from the elements but also provides a final protective seal on the hair shaft, helping to preserve the moisture and nourishment that you have just fed your hair through conditioning.

Remember, hydrating your hair properly prevents unnecessary breakage, dryness, dullness and frizz. Just as water is necessary to hydrate your skin, it is also just as important for your hair. Hydrated hair is more porous and has a greater ability to absorb nutrients; leaving you with gorgeous hair all-year round.

We want to know and see what your winter hair woes are. Share your photo on our Facebook page for your change to win 3 Jane Carter Solution Daily Hydration products to combat your winter hair woes!

Porosity Problems?

Porosity. Let’s talk…porosity refers to how well your hair is able to absorb and hold moisture, aka water. All hair is naturally porous and somewhat permeable to water; it’s determined by the condition of your hair cuticle. Normal porosity hair knows when to take in moisture and how to hold onto it as well.

porosity

Porosity can be affected by external factors causing damage to the cuticle – either remaining closed and not retaining moisture or remaining open and letting moisture out as quickly as it is accepted. So what exactly damages the cuticles in those ways?

  1. mechanical and heat abuse from combs, brushes, and heat styling tools
  2. excessive sun exposure
  3. over-processing from chemical relaxers and permanent colors
  4. continued use of sodium lauryl or ammonium lauryl sulfate-rich shampoos

Be proactive in avoiding cuticle damage by using the correct products to protect and hydrate!

You can reduce heat damage (#1) by using Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner; it’s lightweight formula allows you to reduce the temperature when flat-ironing or blow drying your hair, the bonus – it also doubles as a sun screen (#2).

Soothe over-processed hair (#3) with the Jojoba and Henna essential oils in Restore Creamy Conditioning Cleanser and rebuild strength with complex Amino Acid and Silk protein in Restore Moisture Mist.

Discontinue the use of your sulfate shampoo (#4) and replace it with Hydrating Invigorating Shampoo SLS-Free; the humectants employed during washing help your hair hold more moisture, which is always a benefit.

Knowing your hair’s porosity can help you choose the right products to keep your hair well-moisturized, supple, strong and shiny. Now you’re in the know and armed with suggestions for the best products for your tresses!

Sleek & Chic Hair

Relaxed hair doesn’t have to feel dry and brittle to the touch! Too often relaxing gets the shaft, mainly because of the age-old assumption that it’s too damaging. Contrary to popular belief, you can have perfectly healthy, strong hair with a perm – as long as you know how to properly care for your chemically straightened hair. All you ladies with sleek and chic manes, we’ve got the products you need to maintain moisture and shine.

short relaxed

Relaxed hair requires lots of moisture and products for heal protection and to seal cuticle. These three tips are essential in hydrating relaxed hair:

  1. Apply Hair Nourishing Cream to wet hair after washing and conditioning hair; will provide heat protection from blow drying and prepare hair for flat ironing.
  2. Once hair is dry, mist each section of hair with Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner to protect hair from curling or flat ironing; temperature no higher than 350 degrees.
  3. During styling, add a few drops of Hair Nourishing Serum to hair as a finisher; add shine, seals cuticle and eliminates fly-a-ways.

You may also want to add a humidifier to your bedroom to combat the drying effects of indoor heat. For additional tips and product suggestions, visit our Chemically Straightened Hair page.

Saturday Scalp Treatment

A little TLC can help to keep your skin and hair in excellent condition even in the cold, dry months. If your skin dries out when the weather becomes cooler every autumn, then you probably notice a dry, itchy scalp, and maybe even some flakes, this time of year.

fall beauty

An unhealthy scalp is not only uncomfortable; it can also stop your hair from thriving, which can lead to slower growth and less luster. The culprits are the low moisture contents of cool outside air and heated inside air. Do you need a hair intervention? Well fear not! We have the prescription that you’re looking for – the prescription for a healthy, moisturized scalp with an easy Saturday Scalp Treatment:

  • Before shampooing, apply Scalp Renew to your scalp, massage and let sit for 10 to 15 minutes to exfoliate and cleanse scalp; it is recommended to put a cap over the hair and sit under a dryer.
  • After showering, apply small drops of Scalp Nourishing Serum to the scalp to increase circulation and nourish.

Get a healthy scalp and beautiful hair every season with Jane Carter Solution!

Braids, Braids Everywhere

A big trend in fall and winter are box braids; they were everywhere during Fashion Week and continue to be a fashion must-have. There are many different styles of braids – box braids, micro-braids, fishtail braids, waterfall braids – they look fierce, gives your hair a streamlined and sleek appearance. Box braids are a great protective style, all year long. They provide refuge from having to battle it out with the flat iron or attempting to create the perfect curls; an instant polished, classy look!

box braids

It’s a common misconception that braids cannot be washed without slippage…some men and women go two months without washing their scalp! This leads to a build-up of dirt and sebum which clogs hair follicles resulting in dry, flakey scalp. You simply can maintain good hair and scalp health under these conditions.

  1. Apply Scalp Renew pre-shampoo treatment to exfoliate and detoxify the scalp of sebum and debris.
  2. Dilute Creamy Conditioning Cleanser in a spray bottle filled with water.
  3. Mist scalp and braids; root to tip.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Mist hair with Hydrate Quench.
  6. Apply Scalp Nourishing Serum to sooth and hydrate scalp; a little goes a long way.
  7. Air dry or sit under hooded dryer.
  8. Moisturize hair with Nourish & Shine if needed after dry.

Mist hair daily with  for rehydration with Quench and use a small amount of Scalp Nourishing Serum into your scalp every other day to combat dryness and maintain scalp health.

Box braids can make for a really great low maintenance protective style. In this style you can give your hair a break and some time away to really grow and flourish, if hair growth is one of your goals.
